From @fosteringlove.pdx: “Does anyone else’s cat do this as well? Jasper was doing this to a fly that had accidentally gotten into the foster room yesterday.
What Jasper is doing is called chattering. Cats often chatter at birds or squirrels they see outside the window. Cats chatter when they are excited and it’s a part of their predatory instinct. 🪶
This is the first time I’ve ever actually seen a cat chatter in-person. I’ve only ever seen videos of other cats chattering. It was pretty cool!” #catsofinstagram

Lol. It’s called chattering I think. Usually when they see a bird . ❤️
Mine does it whenever she sees a bird
Our Sam did it when he was living
Yes, it’s common. I call it chattering, I don’t know if there’s a proper word for it, and it’s a behaviour cats display when they see prey that is out of reach. You often see it when cats sit on windowsills watching birds. It’s a sort of frustration movement, the prey triggers an instinctive jaw movement but the cat knows it’s unobtainable so it sort of turns into this chattering noise.
Moi j’ai 2 chats ils font ça tous les deux quand ils voient des oiseaux tout proches
@ekekekkekkek this IG is dedicated to that lol
@emilydebaes , just like Gust. Same movement of the mouth, but different noise
