Let’s be honestcats are weird. Adorably, hilariously, mystifyingly weird. One minute they’re loafing on your laptop; the next, they’re sprinting down the hallway like they’re being chased by ghosts. And then there are those habitsthe ones that make you say, “Is this normal?!”
For Juno, a 3-year-old tabby with expressive eyebrows and boundless curiosity, that habit is… licking plastic bags. Not chewing, not tearingjust gently licking the crinkly surface like it’s a gourmet snack.
“At first I was worried,” says Juno’s human, Marcus. “I thought maybe something was wrong with her or she was missing some nutrient. But turns out, she’s just being a cat.”
Plastic Licking, Sock Stealing, and Other Cat Quirks
Juno’s not alone. Plastic licking is surprisingly commonand often linked to the leftover smells of food, the texture, or even the sound. Vets say as long as your cat isn’t ingesting the material, it’s generally harmless. (Though it’s always good to monitor and remove bags just to be safe.)
Other common “weird” habits that are actually pretty normal:
- Staring at blank walls Cats have sharp hearing and sight, so they may be watching something invisible to us (like light reflections or tiny bugs).
- Bringing you gifts (like socks) A sign of affection and trust! They’re “hunting” for you.
- Chattering at birds A mix of frustration and instinctive mimicry.
Behind Every Quirk Is a Cat’s Mind at Work
What seems odd to us is often just your cat being a highly evolved, highly expressive little predator with a twist of domestic comfort. Many behaviors stem from instinct, curiosity, or even learned routines based on how they interact with you.
So the next time your cat does something that makes you say “huh?”, lean in. Watch. Laugh. And maybe Google itit’s probably more common than you think.
