You might think having a cat around would make living alone feel a little safer, if only because you have another set of ears listening for unusual sounds. Cats are naturally attentive to noises and movements around them, which can make their reactions seem especially noticeable when something catches their attention. But there is a big difference between noticing something and actually being brave enough to investigate it. Flynn, the cat, proves that point rather hilariously when a tiny mystery leaves him looking to his owner for answers.
Cat gets spooked by a suspicious noise despite being owner’s supposed home companion
A video shared by @flynn_cat_ captures the amusing reality of having a cat around when you live by yourself. The clip plays on the common suggestion that getting a cat is a good way to feel less nervous about living alone, only to show that the cat might be just as easily frightened as their owner.
The video opens with the message, “Get a cat so you won’t be scared to live alone.” It then cuts to the supposed reality of that arrangement. Another part of the text on screen reads, “My cat when he hears the slightest noise:”
Flynn can be seen relaxing on a bed, appearing completely at ease as he lounges beside his owner. That changes almost instantly when he seems to hear something unexpected. The cat sits up and becomes visibly alert, his eyes widening as he looks around the room. His pupils appear to grow larger as he focuses on the source of the noise.
Rather than getting up to investigate, Flynn seems to look toward his owner for reassurance. His wide-eyed expression makes it appear as though he is checking whether they heard the same suspicious noise. The brief exchange makes the situation even funnier because the cat who was supposedly there to make his owner feel safer seems to need someone to reassure him first.
The video’s caption sums up the situation simply: “What it’s like living with a scaredy cat.” Viewers had plenty to say about the moment. One user focused on Flynn’s expression, writing, “Not him hitting you with the ‘you heard that too?’” Another imagined the cat asking, “You just gone sit there?”
Interestingly, another viewer noted that frightened pets can have the opposite effect on their owners. “Yeah but it weirdly gives YOU the confidence to square up against whatever frightening them like that,” they wrote.
So while Flynn might not be the fearless protector his owner may have expected, his nervous reactions could still serve a purpose.
