The moment in the post above — From @catmantoo: “ but where is the water going?! Bindi “ — is one of those small everyday scenes that says a lot about life with cats.
Most cats groom themselves so thoroughly that a true bath is rarely necessary — which is good news, because most cats have very strong feelings about water. The cat in the post above is probably going through one of those rare moments where bath, brush, or accidental sink dunk has produced a face you will remember forever.
Self-grooming is not just about cleanliness. Cats spend up to half their waking hours licking themselves because saliva helps regulate their body temperature, smooths the coat, and spreads natural oils that keep their skin healthy. A cat who suddenly stops grooming — or starts overgrooming a single spot — is usually trying to tell you something about stress or pain.
If your cat ever does need a real bath, lukewarm water, a calm voice, and a single trusted towel are your best tools. Most cats tolerate it once they realize the experience is finite and that a treat is waiting on the other side.
