A kitten was rescued from a cramped, dangerous spot beneath a busy Fort Lauderdale bridge, and the little bridge-dweller has traded roaring traffic for a life of belly rubs, toys, and a resident dog he now counts as a best friend.

Ponti’s road to safety was anything but easy. A passerby spotted the tiny kitten on the 17th Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, one of the busiest stretches around, when he noticed him perilously close to rushing traffic.
Frightened and desperate for cover, Ponti squeezed himself underneath the bridge, into a cramped, difficult space with cars thundering by just overhead. It was the kind of spot that makes a rescue both urgent and genuinely dangerous.
That is where Karen, a foster and volunteer with Good Karma Pet Rescue, stepped up. With traffic roaring across the causeway above her, she wedged herself into that tiny space and crawled in after him, refusing to leave one small life behind.

Karen pressed on through the tight, risky space until she reached him, and against all the noise and danger, she carried Ponti out to safety.
Once he was safe, Ponti settled into foster care, and the change since then has been a joy to watch. A few months on, this little bridge-dweller has left his troll-under-the-bridge days behind for good.

The friendship that surprised everyone was the one he struck up with the resident dog in his foster home. “He’s even made friends with the resident dog,” Good Karma Pet Rescue said.
The two have become real buddies, and Ponti has spent his months in foster care training right alongside that pup, which mostly meant licking each other clean and tearing around the house together. All that time with his canine sidekick taught his rescuers what he needs: a built-in playmate, a bouncy cat or a friendly dog, to romp and tumble beside.
