Why Do Cats Knead?

Watching a cat methodically push its paws in and out against a soft blanket — or your stomach — is one of the most endearing things they do. Kneading, sometimes called "making biscuits," is a behavior that follows cats from kittenhood all the way into old age. The reasons behind it are rooted in instinct, emotion, and even scent communication.

It Starts With Nursing

Kittens knead their mother's belly to stimulate milk flow during nursing. The rhythmic pressing triggers let-down and is one of the first complex behaviors a kitten learns. Even after weaning, many cats continue kneading for life, associating the motion with warmth, nourishment, and security.

A Sign of Deep Comfort

Marking Territory With Scent

Preparing a Nesting Spot

Wild cats and big cats pat down grass, leaves, or other materials before lying down — a nest-building instinct. Your cat doing the same to your fleece throw is following millions of years of "make the bed before you sleep" programming. It is instinctively satisfying even when the surface is already perfectly flat.
