One squeeze-up treat is all it takes to get Doobie clocking every move Mom makes. The orange cat sits ready as her owner starts running through a little training session, and @doobsterooni captures five commands in quick succession.

First, Doobie sits. Then she offers a paw, gives a high five, stands upright to reach the treat, and finishes with a full spin. Mom gives the cue, Doobie follows it, and the reward appears. By the end of the session, the cat has worked her way through a pretty impressive collection of dog tricks, with that squeeze-up treat serving as excellent motivation.

Owner uses training techniques to teach cat five simple dog tricks

The first command is “Sit.” Mom holds up one finger, and Doobie drops into position without much hesitation. A little treat follows off camera, which seems to confirm that she knows exactly how this arrangement works. Next, Mom brings her palm down near Doobie’s paw. “Paw Shake.” Doobie lifts her paw and places it against Mom’s hand.

Then comes “High Five.” Mom holds her hand upright, and Doobie presses her paw against it. The difference between the two commands is small, but Doobie seems to know what is being asked. The fourth trick requires a little more effort.

Mom raises the squeeze-up treat above Doobie’s head and gives the command to “Stand.” Doobie stretches up onto her hind legs, following the treat until she gets exactly what she was after. Then mom saves the most active one for last. For “Spin,” she guides the treat around Doobie, and the orange cat follows it through a complete turn before coming straight back for her reward.

Lots of people were impressed by the cat tricks, too. One commenter immediately asked, “Where does someone adopt a cat like that? I want one.” The routine is built around a simple reward system, and Doobie clearly understands the deal. Listen for the cue, follow Mom’s hand, get the treat.

Five commands later, Doobie has managed a sit, paw shake, high five, stand, and spin. Not bad for a cat trick training session that is mostly associated with dogs.
